Car parking charges suspended until August

If you park your vehicle in a permit-controlled car park on any of the University campuses, you are required to display a valid permit. Car parking charges have been suspended during the pandemic, recognising irregular working patterns and extended periods of working from home.

Suspension of car parking charges is being extended for a further period, until 1 August 2022, to support the phased return to on-campus working for more of our staff. We are currently addressing more flexible options around car parking permits, and a new parking app, in response to an increase in hybrid working and changed working patterns. We will update you on this over the summer.

What does this mean for me?

  • If you have an orange annual 2020/21 staff permit this will not be replaced and will be deemed as valid until 1 August 2022.
  • If you need to park on campus and do not have a current permit you will need to apply for one – but there will be no charge.
  • Parking enforcement is undertaken by the Parking Team and vehicles not displaying a valid permit may receive a parking charge notice.
  • Applications for new permits are expected to open in June, with more information on this to follow, but no payments will be taken until 1 August at the earliest.

Travelling to campus more sustainably

Longer-term, and post-COVID, it is clear we will need to plan for a shift to less private car use and reduced parking on our campuses, for a number of reasons. This will be in line with our Strategic Plan – Sustainability and Travel Plan, as well as Southampton City and Winchester City Councils’ long-term Transport and Sustainability Strategies, which will see a move away from private car travel to greater use of public transport and alternative travel options.

For full details about all methods of travel to our campuses, please visit our Transport webpages.

It is important that you use our online booking system if you have visitors coming to campus to enable our parking team to monitor capacity.
