National windsurfing winners

Team Southampton hit the water in March and took victory at the BUCS windsurfing championships in Bristol with some fantastic racing and freestyle performances.

The windsurfing squad displayed high speeds, control and skills on the waves at the annual championships, competing against students from all over the county in a race for podium places and victory.

Podium highlights include performances from Quinn Squires who came first in Freestyle, and Grace Main who came second in the Women’s Intermediate.

The racing teams also placed extremely well, with Quinn Squires, Corentin Jego and Cameron Barr finishing first, and a third-place finish from Josie Spencer, Ossian Bracegirdle and Oliver Hutchinson. Cameron also came first in the Freestyle race and men’s series overall for the season.

Alongside these impressive achievements, beginners from the society competed in their first races, gaining valuable experience and showcasing the growth of the club, with incredible support from veterans and fellow beginners alike.

Sophie Buck (VP for Southampton University Windsurfing Club) spoke about the competition:

“Winning was unexpected, we thought we would rank fairly high up but not as high as we did. It felt amazing for the team to come first, particularly as we’ve worked incredibly hard this year to improve everyone’s abilities, especially as COVID caused a halt to beginners being able to learn last year. It’s caused even more of a drive within the society to work harder and achieve better results next year!

“We can’t wait for events to start again in the new year, and we will push everyone to compete as much as possible. We’re also hoping to win our bid to host nationals here next year!”
