Save the date for this year’s Three Minute Thesis and Doctoral College Awards

The Doctoral College are excited to unveil a new-look events programme for this year.

Rather than coming together once a year for the Festival of Doctoral Research, their new events programme will offer more opportunities for postgraduate researchers (PGRs) to meet up more regularly as a community.

As part of this new approach, the team have kept in popular events including the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition and the Doctoral College Awards. Both events are planned to take place in-person on Highfield Campus on Friday 17 June, so please save the date so you can join the team and celebrate the achievements of our PGRs and their supervisors this year.

How to take part in 3 Minute Thesis®

PGRs who want to take on the challenge of presenting their research in just three minutes, with only a single PowerPoint slide to aid them, are invited to sign up for 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®), the popular worldwide competition.

The ability to creatively communicate your research and explain why it’s important is a crucial skill for all researchers. 3MT® provides a great opportunity for PGRs to develop this skill in a supportive environment.

All doctoral researchers can enter, and later-stage researchers are especially encouraged to take part. New researchers can support their peers by coming along to the faculty heats and final competition.

The deadline to enter is Tuesday 3 May, with faculty heats taking place throughout May (faculty heats may take place either in-person or online). Faculty winners will take part in the live 3MT® final in-person, on Friday 17 June at Highfield.

There are cash prizes available for the runners-up and winners, with the overall Southampton winner progressing through to the 2022 Vitae 3MT® national competition.

Find out more about 3MT® – including the competition rules, judging criteria and how to apply.

Doctoral College Awards

Our popular Doctoral College Awards return for 2022, giving us the opportunity to celebrate the exceptional achievements of our doctoral researchers.

Do you know a PGR who fits the bill for the Research and Director’s awards? Please nominate them and allow the team to recognise their contributions to doctoral research.

Director’s Awards – this award recognises the exceptional achievements and contributions of our doctoral researchers on a variety of different themes, including: education, enterprise, citizenship and community, public engagement and outreach, and special commendation.

Research Awards – this award recognises the exceptional contribution of our doctoral researchers to a research group, School, Faculty or University research strategy.

If a PGR has made a meaningful contribution to you or others, please take the time to nominate them.

The Doctoral College look forward to celebrating all of the nominees at the awards ceremony on Friday 17 June.
