Funded Doctoral Supervision Opportunities: how you can get involved

The University’s Defence and Security Mobility Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is a £1.5million ground-breaking initiative funded by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), which aims to provide doctoral-level skills and training associated with the Defence and Security (D & S) sector. The DTP works closely with key UK partners to offer doctoral programmes to those working in or transitioning across the sector.

These include:

  • existing Defence and Security staff
  • those looking to transition from serving military to civilian roles
  • those in active policing
  • returners from career breaks to hi-tech D&S related work.

The DTP offers a flexible route to a PhD allowing researchers to balance work and study. This unique route aims to provide flexibility for employers and candidates, drawing on a pool of talent that may not otherwise consider traditional doctoral routes.

Prior to starting the doctorate, applicants undertake a short internship, which allows the candidate and management team to assess if doctoral study is suited to them.

All the students recruited so far, and the applicants for 2022 entry, already possess relevant degrees, many also with masters.

Further details are available at the DTP website.

Could you supervise a Defence and Security Mobility PhD student?

The Defence and Security Mobility DTP is now inviting academics who may be interested in supervising these fully funded students to contact us.

Academic staff and research fellows with research interests overlapping with the EPSRC remit (or related interdisciplinary themes) are most welcome. Current projects span machine learning, cyber, data, optimisation, aerosols, computational biology, procurement, legal matters, EM and acoustics. More areas are added as applicants apply.

The DTP is looking to start conversations with potential supervisors now, ready for doctoral students to commence research this autumn. Doctoral candidates who have a successful interview will begin their internship in July this year, where potential supervisory staff will also be invited to be present.

Please email the Defence and Security Mobility DTP if you are interested in supervising a doctoral student.

Join the new Defence Network

The Defence Security and Mobility DTP is also launching a new Defence and Security Network to enhance existing partnerships and to develop new research opportunities.

The network will facilitate access to collaboration, knowledge transfer and innovation workshops, with a programme of information sessions, networking opportunities and guest speaker events being planned.

If you’d like to find out more about the network, please email the Defence and Security Mobility DTP.
