Update on 2022-23 pay negotiations

Annual pay negotiations are held between the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), which represents the 145 Higher Education employers participating in this year’s pay negotiations, and the five sector trade unions. These include UCU, UNISON and Unite, who represent staff here at Southampton.

The latest on this year’s negotiations:

  • UCEA has made a final pay offer which provides for an uplift of 3.0% for staff on or above spine point 20.
  • The offer also includes higher uplifts for staff on the lowest spine points used at Southampton, where it is acknowledged that cost of living pressures are most keenly felt.
  • The overall offer is worth 3.18% on the total paybill and is the highest uplift for the lowest points ever offered in New JNCHES negotiations, recognizing the current inflationary pressures.

You can view full details of the final offer on the UCEA website.

The unions have noted that this is the final offer and have undertaken to consult their committees and wider memberships in line with their decision-making structures

UCEAs final offer will build on action already taken by the University this year, after we increased the values of spine points 6-11 from 1 April to ensure that all of our employees are paid at least £10.25 per hour, exceeding the latest Living Wage Foundation rate of £9.90 per hour.

The majority of our Level 1-6 staff are entitled to incremental pay progression in August, in addition to the outcomes of this year’s pay negotiations.
