Design a flag for Anti-Bullying Week

The UoS Respect Group is organising University wide events and activities for this year’s Anti-Bullying Week in November, while raising awareness of our commitment to treating everyone in the community with dignity and respect.

To mark the week, staff and students are invited to submit a design for a flag, in a .png format, which is unique and reflects respect and inclusion at our University. You should provide a short description of your piece – written or verbal – outlining your reasons for your art.

Next steps

Please submit your expression of interest by 12:00 on Monday 20 June 2022, briefly explaining why you would like to take part in this opportunity and what your art is likely to be. Submit this, or any queries, to [email protected]

You will be informed by email on Wednesday 22 June 2022 if you have been shortlisted and asked to attend a short informal briefing on Friday 24 June 2022.

You will then have until midnight on Sunday 31 July 2022 to submit your final design.

How will your art be used?

We aim to create a flag to represent the University of Southampton’s commitment to respect.  The flag will be raised on the main University flagpole (Jubilee Plaza) on Highfield Campus and will be a dimension of 229 cm x 114 cm.

You will be fully credited for your work. There will also be an opportunity for all successful images to be used on other projects, including webpages and awareness raising events.

Background

Last year, we launched our anti-harassment campaign ‘Expect Respect’ alongside the Report + Support tool in partnership with the Students’ Union.

The campaign built on the 2018 community campaign ‘UoS Respect’ to reinforce our belief that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, and we should all be able to benefit from a positive and supportive environment to work or study.

The UoS Respect Group aims to:

  • Emphasise expectations of appropriate behaviour and encourage all to role model those behaviours.
  • Promote being an ‘upstander’ or an ‘active bystander’. Call out behaviour that is not acceptable and challenge safely.
  • Promote a culture where it is easy and acceptable for staff and students to report incidents of bullying and harassment.
  • Work with other groups, teams and departments, staff and students to ensure joined-up resources and training relating to equality and respect across the University.
