University acquires Sir James Matthews Building in Guildhall Square

The Sir James Matthews Building in Guildhall Square Southampton has been purchased by the University of Southampton from Solent University. The continued use of the building for education will ensure it continues to benefit learners, local businesses and the city.

Phil Wright, Senior Vice President (Academic), at the University of Southampton says:

“I’m delighted that through the purchase of the Sir James Matthews Building, the University of Southampton is now able to extend its education activities into the city centre. The University already has a presence at Guildhall Square with the opening of its John Hansard Gallery in 2018 as part of the cultural quarter, and some administration offices on the south of the square.

“There will be a need for the building to undergo some refurbishment, but we are confident that we can give it a new lease of life and re-open it by the new year. This new education space and our student residences at Mayflower will see more vibrancy in the city centre which we are certain will add to the local economy and culture.”

Completion of the sale happened this week. We are currently undertaking timetable modelling to ensure that we optimise the use of this new space for the University’s teaching and learning in the coming academic year.
