Parking Permit Changes

This article has now been superseded by the Parking Permit update published in November 2022.

Those of you who park your vehicle in a permit-controlled car park on any of our University campuses will be aware that car parking charges have been suspended since the start of the pandemic.

As we transition into the Future Ways of Working, the University has identified that more flexible permit options will be required to support staff who work on campus regularly and those who work following a more hybrid model.

On this basis the University has made the decision to continue the suspension of charges until 1 January 2023, after which a new option will be available to those who qualify for a parking permit.

The new scheme will provide increased flexibility, with day rates available to support hybrid working. The new permits and day rates will be scaled based on your salary level and will continue to be split based on your vehicle’s CO2 emissions, with higher emission vehicles paying a higher rate, matching the previous permit structure.

The permit system will provide two options:

  1. You can apply for an annual parking permit, which will be paid via monthly salary deductions.

Or,

  1. You can use the new, flexible parking permit that allows you to pay on the day via PayByPhone. You can pay for your parking via the app, on the PayByPhone website, by text or by calling the number posted on the signage.

Both parking options will require you to display a valid University parking permit as this remains the best way to manage parking demand, encourage reduced car use and help to improve sustainability across our estate.

If you share your journey to work and use an annual parking permit, you have the option to apply for a discounted shared permit rate. More details on lift sharing can be found here.

Income from car parking contributes to the budget to support sustainable transport,  including on site cycle storage and our Uni-Link bus services.

More information about sustainable transport options can be found on our Transport website.

Permits will continue to be available to staff who live 3+ miles away from Highfield campus.

More information, including how to apply, will be shared with staff over the coming months.
