Throughout the 2021/22 academic year, the University of Southampton’s Sport Scholarship Programme has supported 41 student-athletes, providing a host of services to facilitate their sporting pursuits.

The programme is delivered in such a way that emphasises continuous, holistic support and fosters an elite athlete community. The Strength and Conditioning support has grown significantly, with greater engagement across all scholarship award levels (Gold, Silver, and Talent ID), alongside the newly branded New Balance sportswear, and continued development of both financial and academic provision. For the 2022/23 academic year, a new Bronze scholarship category has been created, taking the number of levels you could apply for up to four.

How to apply

The Sports Scholarship Programme is open for applications until Tuesday 9 September. You can find the application form, as well as more details about the programme, selection criteria, and types of scholarship available on the University website.

The scholarship team have been proud to witness exceptional sport scholar achievements in a huge variety of sports, and across multiple levels. Scholars have:

  • represented England at the Women’s Ashes and Women’s Cricket World Cup Final;
  • captained Southampton Women’s FC to a League and Cup double;

Isra Ilyas, Medicine student and Taekwondo Scholar said: “The sport scholarship programme this year has helped me massively in terms of strength and conditioning. I’ve noticed progress both in the gym and in the ring in a short space of time and am grateful for the programme, and the financial help has benefited me greatly in terms of access to more training and competitions.”

Lucy Gadd, Psychology student and Road Cycling Scholar, said: “The sports scholarship programme has given me the confidence to commit full-time to my training, knowing my academic ability won’t be compromised. A personal favourite part of the programme is the access to a great gym facility that is only for scholarship athletes, with PT support whenever required.”

The programme will grow further in the upcoming academic years due to the new Highfield Campus gym build. The sports performance centre will move to the heart of campus to enhance the performance sport support, eliminating travel and improving its presence and visibility within the student community.
