What is Cyber Essentials?
This is a government backed scheme overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). It is designed for organisations and companies to demonstrate best practice in cyber security, helping them build resilience against cyber-attacks and protecting sensitive data.

Our current certification expires on 2 August 2023.

How does it help us?
It ensures that five technical controls are in place to protect our systems and data:

  • firewalls
  • secure configuration
  • user access control
  • malware protection
  • and security update management

At UoS, Cyber Essentials compliance is often necessary to secure research funding. As previously communicated, the NCSC updated the Cyber Essentials specification this year which has changed the University’s scope and requirements. To learn more about the requirements, please go to the latest Cyber Security news page.

If you’d like to talk to someone about the certification, including what is and isn’t covered, please email [email protected].
