The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It replaced the previous Research Assessment Exercise in 2014, and the latest one was conducted in 2021. The overarching policy aim for research assessment is to secure the continuation of a world-class, dynamic and responsive research base across the full academic spectrum within UK higher education.
Introduction to the REF results
157 UK higher education institutions (HEIs) made submissions in 34 subject-based units of assessment (UOAs). The submissions were assessed by panels of experts, who produced an overall quality profile for each submission. Each overall quality profile shows the proportion of research activity judged by the panels to have met each of the four starred quality levels in steps of 1%.
Southampton made submissions to 25 UOAs.
The results of the REF 2021 were published on May 12, 2022, and their ramifications for each school and the University, in general, are still being processed.
What does this mean for us?
Join Professor Mark Spearing (Vice-President Research & Enterprise), Dr Sarah Clare Hartley (Faculty REF Officer) and Omar Salim (interim Head of Research Performance) in this online event as they provide an overview of the REF2021 results in relation to the entire University as well as the implications for the future.
The University research strategy and its relation to the next REF will also be discussed.
