The University is announcing today that it is investing £40 million in our sport and wellbeing facilities, as part of its Estate strategic plan.
As well as extending and refurbishing the Jubilee Sports Centre on Highfield Campus that was announced at the end of last year, there are also plans to upgrade a number of all-weather pitches and install energy efficiency lighting at Wide Lane, plus a remodelling of our Water Sports provision.
Our Estates Strategic Plan outlines the importance of shaping our spaces into a truly inclusive environment that supports and enhances the wellbeing of our community. By diversifying and upgrading our facilities we can offer an improved student experience to entice both those already proficient, and those who are new to an activity.
The extension to the Jubilee Sports Centre is a significant step forward to achieving these aims and establishing a world class environment for our students, staff and local community. Works are progressing on site, with demolition complete and the next phase of construction due to start shortly.
Kieron Broadhead, Senior Executive Director, Students and Infrastructure, commented:
“I’m delighted that the University has made such a significant commitment to developing extensive new facilities that will attract a wider number of people to participate in activities that are good for their bodies and their minds. There is a direct link between wellbeing and successful learning, and engaging in activity helps build a sense of belonging which is core to improving the student experience. ”
The new Jubilee Sports Centre building will house five new sports studios including dedicated martial arts and indoor cycling spaces, speed climbing, top rope climbing and a new modernised and improved gym including mixed weight and cardio zones. The building has been designed to be inclusive to all potential users, to connect to the outdoors, increase natural light, and to help meet our Low Carbon Target.
The new Jubilee Sports extension is due to be open to users in 2024, with the upgrades to the other sports facilities also expected by that date.
