A very warm welcome to our new and returning students. The academic year commences soon and we are looking forward to seeing you on campus.

We’ve put together a list of things for you to do before you arrive at the University of Southampton:

  1. Complete the essential Welcome tasks

There are a few essential tasks for you to complete before you start your studies, such as setting up your IT account, enrolling, applying for your ID card and registering with a doctor.

Top tip: When creating IT accounts and choosing new passwords, we recommend using three random words to ensure it is strong. For example, “phoneglassespaper”. Visit SharePoint for further security guidance.

For returning students, you will need to re-enrol for the new academic year via Banner Self-Service.

  2. Complete your Welcome induction

Whether you’re a new undergraduate or postgraduate student, completing the online induction will introduce you to what it is like to study here and give you with the tools you need to access teaching and learning.

Please note, if you’re a new PGR student, your induction will be accessible via the PGR Handbook from mid-September by email.

  3. Book our meet and greet service (International students only)

Our free meet and greet service is for students arriving to study in the UK for the first time. Book in advance and our Meet and Greet Team will meet you at Arrivals in the airport.

  4. Get involved with Welcome events

We have a range of exciting and fun events taking place throughout your first few weeks to help you connect with the UoS community, such as Freshers Fair, games and competitions, and a variety of sports activities. There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people, explore the campuses and get to know the University.

  9. Returning students and multi-factor authentication (MFA)

If you are retuning with a new mobile phone and use the MFA app to authenticate your identity when logging into your university IT account, follow these simple steps so you don’t get locked out:

    – Switch your authenticator app from your old device to your new one
    – Remove your authenticator app from your old phone

Refer to section six of this step-by-step guide for more MFA information. We also strongly recommend setting up a second authentication method detailed in section five.
