Obituary: Dr Tim Millar

It is with shock and great sadness that the Faculty of Medicine announces the untimely death of our friend and colleague, Dr Timothy Millar, on Tuesday 20 September at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, after a short illness. He was 51 years old.

Originally from Warrington, Dr Millar was appointed as Lecturer in Pharmacology in the medical school in September 2005 after post-doctoral posts in Calgary, Canada. He became a central part of the clinical pharmacology team, teaching the subject brilliantly across several years of our Bachelor of Medicine programmes and gaining a strong following among medical students for his knowledge, expertise and kindness, winning the faculty award for Most Engaging Lecturer in 2021. He also led teaching modules in both year 1 and year 2, and most recently guided year 2 assessments expertly through the difficult Covid years.

Tim’s career-long research interests were in vascular biology. He investigated immunological and microbiological aspects of cardiovascular disease and worked with engineering colleagues in developing experimental models of the local vasculature. He played an active role in the British Microcirculation Society. He supervised over 30 undergraduate research projects and nine PhD students in his field and his work was published extensively and internationally.

Tim was involved in so many aspects of the collegiate life and work of the Faculty that he will be very sorely missed by his colleagues. He leaves behind his wife, Ronaye, whom he married in June this year, his two sons, to whom he was a devoted father, and other members of his family. We appreciate that in due course his friends, colleagues and students will wish to express their condolences individually and as a Faculty to his widow and family.
