Cyber security is everybody’s responsibility, it impacts all of us almost every day.
Earlier this year, the Government published the results of a cyber security breach survey on educational institutions. Did you know that 92% of the higher education institutions identified breaches or attacks in the previous 12 months?
Did you also know that our University email system receives approximately 10,000 phishing emails a day?
Thankfully, technology can block the majority of incoming phishing emails but it only takes one to get through into a mailbox and trick us into opening a malicious attachment or link. This could happen to any of us, so we need to ensure we are the strongest line of defence for the University.
Staff and PGRs: What do I need to do?
If you haven’t already done so, please ensure that you complete the two mandatory cyber security training courses as soon as possible. By completing these courses, you will have the knowledge to avoid falling victim to a potential cyber threat and understand how to keep our data safe when working away from the office.
Each course only takes 30 minutes.
Email Security & Phishing course – you will learn what phishing is and the key elements of a phishing email. You will also learn how to tell if a cyber-criminal is impersonating a senior member of staff in order to ask you to do something unusual (business email compromise).
Working Securely Away from Campus course – even if you are primarily based on Campus, you will benefit from this course as you will learn the risks when using mobile devices, the potential threat from cyber criminals on social media and the risks of disclosing information when travelling.
Where can I find more information?
The courses can also be accessed via the online training portal or the Security Awareness Training SharePoint page.
If you have any issues logging into the training, please follow the guidance on this knowledge base article.
