Leading cosmologist Professor Hiranya Peiris to give STAG Public Lecture 2022

Professor Hiranya Peiris, a world-renowned cosmologist at University College London/Oskar Klein Centre will give the annual Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre lecture on Wednesday 23 November at 14:30 at Turner Sims. A small number of tickets are still available to book, and you can register to watch the live stream here.

Arguably the most compelling questions in modern physics revolve around how the Universe evolved to its present state across cosmic time and how structure was imprinted. Professor Peiris has made enormous contributions to our understanding of these problems, working on missions mapping the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and leveraging new surveys of the sky to push the boundaries of human understanding. For her ground-breaking work she has been awarded numerous prestigious prizes including the Hoyle Medal, Göran Gustafsson Prize in physics and Eddington medal to name but a few. In this lecture, entitled “The Universe: A Detective Story” Professor Peiris will present the story of the fundamental physics revealed by the Big Bang itself.

Dr Matthew Middleton, Director of the STAG Research Centre, said: “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to have Professor Peiris delivering the 2022 STAG Public Lecture. Professor Peiris is one of the leading cosmologists of her generation and, like everyone else, I am excited to hear her insights into the frontiers of fundamental physics.”
