Sustainability: University passes environmental audit with flying colours

We have passed a major environmental audit which shows we are successfully managing our impact on the environment.

The environmental audit is for compliance with ISO14001, an internationally agreed standard which helps organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

The audit takes into consideration all environmental issues relevant to our operations, such as legal compliance, air pollution, water, waste management, climate change mitigation, resource use and efficiency.

We received extremely positive feedback from the auditor on our approach and the way sustainability measures are embedded in University operations.

The annual external environmental audits form part of a wider audit schedule that Environment and Sustainability Manager, Sarah Puckett, conducts at different high-risk areas across the University.

“Throughout the year, I visit different areas of the University to conduct an environmental audit. This is to ensure that areas with a high environmental risk are environmentally compliant, so that any issues can be highlighted and quickly resolved.

“The audits involve checking that waste is segregated correctly, ensuring that chemicals are appropriately stored, energy is being managed in accordance to the building’s needs and that the risk of an environmental incident occurring is kept low. Environmental auditing is the less well-known area of environment and sustainability, but is incredibly important to ensure environmental compliance is maintained.”

If you see anything on campus that you think would cause damage to the environment, you can log an environmental incident on SUSSED through the H&S/Crime reporting button.
