University Celebrates UK Disability History Month 16th November – 16th December

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event which aims to raise awareness of the history and struggles of people with disabilities. The theme for 2022 in Health and Wellbeing. You can join a range of events to celebrate the month.

Disability Safe Listening Space

Staff and PGRs are invited to join Camilla Gibson, Head of EDI and Libby Barton, EDI Specialist and UoS Disability Staff Network Chair for a Disability Safe Listening Space on Thursday 24 November at 11.00 via Teams. If you would like to register for this confidential session to discuss disability, then please email [email protected].

Flag Raising

International Day of People with Disabilities falls on Saturday 3 December in recognition of this the University will be raising the purple flag on Thursday 1 December. Staff and students and are invited to join the UoS Disability Staff Network, Wendy Appleby (Disability Equality Sponsor), and Shaun Williams (UoS Disability Staff Network Senior Leader Champion), for a flag raising ceremony at 09.30 at the flagpole, Jubilee Plaza (outside building 85) on Highfield campus.

Join us in this two-part series of informal online one-hour events which provide an insight into the legacy of Disability Art and Culture and its impact on UK Disability Rights In the past, present and future.

An in-conversation between Dr Ronda Gowland-Pryde and former Go-Make, Disability Arts Development Agency South residency artist and University of Southampton alumni, David Dixon. David will be talking about his experience and career as an artist including the development of Chapel Arts Studios in Andover, Hampshire.

Opened by staff disability network chair Libby Barton, the first session facilitated by Vice-Chair, Dr Ronda Gowland-Pryde, will provide an introduction to UK Disability Art and Culture exploring how it has challenged the way disabled people have been represented in society informed by the social model of disability.
