Out now: Space at Southampton 2022

An exciting new publication by Research and Innovation Services (RIS) is out now, showcasing some of the inspiring and pioneering space-related research taking place at our University.

Space at Southampton 2022 includes an in-depth look at work at the University to enable space-based solar power to become a reality, from clever coatings to absorb the sun’s energy without burning up, to inventing a new type of space reflector, to beaming the solar energy back down to Earth.

Find out how new materials and new equipment are being invented for space; how space data is saving lives; and how economical routes through space are plotted to take advantage of the slingshot effect around planets.

There is also an introduction to Southampton Geospatial, a new cross-University initiative bringing together geospatial expertise to create new opportunities.

You can also read about Britain’s first astronaut, Helen Sharman’s visit to the University, and hear from two budding astronauts from Southampton who made it through the initial stages of the European Space Agency’s selection process.
