Online exams and assessments: tips and hints (2022-23)

Here are some tips and hints for digital assessments and online submissions including what to do when things do not go to plan:

  • Submitting assessments online
Read the submission instructions and guidance provided carefully, noting details such as the submission portal and when it will be available to use. Wherever possible, we recommend leaving a minimum of 30 minutes for uploading assessments to allow time in case of any issues.
  • If you have technical issues uploading files or during your assessment
Take screenshots or photos of the error notices on your screen. Make sure they clearly show the time, internet provider and date. Submit the evidence as soon as you can via a Special Consideration request to let the University know.
  • Timed assessments
You cannot be granted a deadline extension for a timed assessment. Late penalties (as applied on coursework) are not available if you fail to submit by the deadline: you will receive a mark of zero, just as you would if you failed to attend an exam.
  • Unauthorised online help
External companies may approach you online, offering essay writing or other academic skills services under the guise of providing proof-reading, note-taking, or ‘homework help’ services. Do not be tempted to take up such services or seek unauthorised help as this may be treated as cheating or external authorship/assistance.
  • Citing and referencing
Citing and referencing your work correctly is essential. Visit the Library website to find out the style for your school and department, and associated guidance for the style. Book an online 1:1 appointment if you want to support with citing, referencing and academic integrity.
  • Academic skills support
The Academic Skills Service offers a variety of resources to help you study smart including guidance on how to prepare for exams and maintain good academic integrity online. You can visit the drop in service at the Academic Skills Hub, based on Level 2 of the Hartley Library from 10:00-16:00 most working days. Please note that it will be closed from 16:00 on Thursday 15 December until 10:00 on Tuesday 3 January.
  • Where to study – Library opening hours
Hartley Library on Highfield Campus will remain open for 24 hours until tomorrow (15 December), then starting again on Monday 9 January. It will remain open over the break (excluding 25 and 26 December), but at different times. Visit the website to view opening hours for Hartley Library and all the University libraries during this period.

Important updates

  • Exam and assessment timetables
Do not forget – your personal exam and assessment timetable for semester one will be available to view via your SUSSED account no later than 17:00 on Thursday 22 December – also available via the My Southampton app. It will include the time, date, location and seat number for your exams.
  • eAssignments system temporarily unavailable
Please be aware that eAssignments system will be unavailable on Tuesday 20 December for an essential system upgrade. This means you will not be able to access the system or submit assignments on this day only. Read this SUSSED announcement for more information about what this means for you.
