Here is a reminder about preparing for your assessments, where to access support this winter break, tips for working away from campus securely, and service opening hours.
Around-the-clock support
You are never alone. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including this winter break. The Student Hub is your first point of contact for questions and concerns relating to fees, financial support, accommodation, wellbeing, disability, careers and course administration.
You can speak to an advisor instantly via online chat, by email, or call us at any hour on 02380 599 599 – save our number on your phone in case you ever need it. You can also visit the team in person at our campuses. Recap on this earlier SUSSED article to view the altered walk-in service open times during the break.
Preparing for your assessments
On Thursday 22 December, your personal exam and assessment timetable will be available to view via SUSSED. You should familiarise yourself with your timetable and continue to prepare for and attend your exams in January 2023.
If industrial action is planned during this time, we want to reassure you that we will be taking reasonable steps to reduce any impact on your exams and studies. We want all our students to succeed and have policies in place to ensure your progression is not impacted in the event of strike action or Action Short of Strike.
If you are worried about your exams, or feeling any impact on your health or wellbeing, please get in touch with The Student Hub or access self-help resources on the University website.
Working securely away from campus
Visit SharePoint to understand the main security risks you may face when using devices away from campus and best practice including FAQs and useful links if you have any questions about the steps you can take.
Essential IT maintenance and Wi-Fi outages
Tomorrow (Saturday 17 December 2022) between 09:00-17:00 essential maintenance is being carried out which means there will be intermittent disruption to the network and Wi-Fi in the following buildings:
- Erasmus Park halls of residence
- City Gateway halls of residence
- National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS)
- 1 Guildhall Square (1GS)
- Sir James Matthews Building (SJM)
- Studio 144
Use the online campus map to see what alternative workstations are available. Please note – while other university buildings and services are not expected to be impacted, there may be a risk of interruption throughout the day.
IT support services
Will be closed on Friday 23 December and throughout the winter break period. Read the announcement on SUSSED for more information about the IT support service hours.
Careers information, advice and guidance
The Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise service including 1:1 appointments and workshops bookable via MyCareer, will not be available between Friday 23 December 2022 and Monday 2 January 2023.
Your safety is a priority
If you are out and about celebrating this festive season with friends, or studying late on campus, remember there is safety in numbers: stick together and head home together. Make sure everyone knows how and when each of you are getting home, never walk home alone and get a taxi from a licensed firm or taxi rank. With colder weather upon us, wrap up warm and wear as many layers as possible.
Be aware of financial scams – particularly at this time of year. Take care and treat any requests with caution – do not share your personal information and bank details. Visit the Student Safety SharePoint site for some examples of common scams aimed at students, as well as how to report them, and where to find support should you need it.

Remember…

If you are leaving for the winter break, remember to consider those friends who are staying in Southampton, Winchester or not celebrating festivities. Just sending a simple message can make someone’s day.
