As we approach the start of the new term on Monday, we have put together some travel, safety and study tips – as well as funding opportunities – to help support you this semester.
Technology grant to help with your studies
You can apply for a grant to go towards equipment needed for your studies, which includes course-related computer hardware and software such as laptops, screens and headphones. You may request one or more items of hardware or software in your application with a maximum award of £300. Apply for the Technology grant on the University website.
Travel to and from campus
We know many of you will be travelling to and from campus, the library and other venues to revise and meet deadlines:
- Single bus fares reduced to £2
From 1 January to 31 March 2023, most single bus fares will cost just £2 on the Unlink bus service. Visit the Unilink webpage to understand more about the pricing changes and how best to take advantage of weekly and monthly tickets for regular bus users. - Secure your bike
If you travel by bike, make sure you lock it through the frame and wheels and remove the removable parts. It only takes a few seconds for an unsecured or poorly secured bike to be taken. Visit SharePoint for advice to protect your bike. - SUSU safety bus
If you are returning from Highfield Campus late at night, SUSU run a free safety bus service to your doorstep – check the schedule on the SUSU website. - Late night study shifts: safety after dark
Never walk alone at night. Stick with your friends whenever you can, and use busy, main routes and paths in well-lit areas. Be aware of your surroundings – do not wear headphones or talk on your mobile.
Academic support
The free Academic Skills Service can help you with academic skills and guidance on exams and assessments including bookable appointments. The Academic Skills Hub runs an in-person drop-in service on all aspects of academic skills open from 10:00-16:00, Monday-Friday, in Room 2045 on Level 2 of Hartley Library.
Hartley Library and study spaces on our campuses
Explore the University of Southampton campus map to find study and social spaces on our campuses, including Hartley Library on Highfield Campus – open 24 hours a day from Monday. View opening hours for all our campus libraries.
Respect each other
Wearing face coverings in our buildings is a matter of personal choice. Please continue to be respectful and considerate of those that choose to wear them – each individual circumstance will be different.
Events and activities to unwind
