Five ways to stay ahead of the cost of living rises

The cost of living is impacting nearly everyone across the country, including you, our students. As we step into January with many looking to set out financial goals, we have listed five ways that may help you stay ahead of the crisis.

The University and Students’ Union are continuing to find ways to support you, help make a difference and ensure you get the most out of your student experience. Find everything in place on the Cost of Living SharePoint site, which is kept up-to-date with the latest information, funding and offers.

  1. Make a budget

Get a good handle on your money this semester. A student-friendly tool can help you turn your regular income and expenses into an easy-to-use spending plan. Knowing how much you can afford for weekly groceries or a night out can reduce stress, give you a sense of control about your finances and keep you from overspending. You can find a range of interactive budgeting resources and a calculator tool at Blackbullion.

  2. Save on subscriptions

Check your direct debits and standing orders to see if you can cut subscriptions or memberships. It is easy to forget about regular payments, and they often add up. Take the opportunity to read through your last month’s bank statement to make sure you’re staying on budget.

  3. £0 spend day

Seven days a week usually means seven days of spending. Challenge yourself to go one day without paying—for anything! Make your coffee at home to-go instead of grabbing one when you are out (or pop over to the Faith and Reflection Centre on campus for a free tea or coffee on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00), make dinner using ingredients you already have, watch a movie with friends instead of going out. Your creativity may surprise you.

  4. Free food!

The University and SUSU have stepped in to help with food costs while prices are high. There is a special promotion for free or reduced meals every weekday. Find all the details on free soup and hot drinks—a £2 Friday Fry-up and more—on the Cost of Living SharePoint site.

  5. Have a chat with our experts

Advisors from the Financial Support Team are happy to discuss any questions or concerns you might have about your financial situation. Book a 1:1 Teams appointment for a day and time that is convenient for you. Advisors can also confirm if you’re eligible for the Student Support Fund, Technology Fund or Health and Wellbeing Fund.

Remember, you are never alone

The Student Hub is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and are your first point of contact for any questions or concerns. You can speak to an advisor instantly via online chat, by email, or call at any hour on 02380 599 599 – save this number on your phone in case you ever need it. You can also visit The Student Hub in person on our campuses.
