Southampton Holocaust and Genocide Day commemorative event 25 January

Southampton will mark the UK’s national Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day with a commemorative event organised by our University’s Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations and hosted by Solent University.

The event will take place in the Palmerston Lecture Theatre at Solent University on Wednesday 25 January from 18:00 to 20:00 (doors will open at 17:30). The free event is hybrid, and all are welcome to attend. You can register for the commemorative event on Eventbrite.

The evening will feature a roundtable discussion with Professor Jeremy Hicks (Queen Mary University of London), Dr Markian Prokopovych (University of Durham), and Mr Graham Cole (Holocaust Education Trust, Parkes Honorary Fellow) on the theme of ‘Holocaust by bullets’ and the ethical questions raised by Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa’s recent film ‘Babi Yar. Context (2021)’. Read our blog examining the topic for the roundtable discussion in greater detail.

There will be a reading of poems based on the Cambodian Genocide by students from Solent University. Southampton school pupils’ reflections from outreach workshops will also be shared.

Refreshments will be available after the event and attendees will be able to tour an exhibition and stalls featuring local community groups and charities related to Holocaust Memorial Day.

Film screening

You can also opt-in to receive a link to watch the film at home prior to the event at Solent University when registering for the event. The film will also be screened the day after the event (Thursday 26 January) at 18:00 on Highfield Campus in the Union Films student cinema (Building 42, SUSU). Visit the University website to find out more about the ‘Babi Yar. Context’ film screening on campus.
