We know many colleagues may be concerned around the impact this will have on balancing their workload with caring and parenting responsibilities, especially if schools are closed unexpectedly on the day.

Please reach out to your line manager to discuss options in advance. These may include:

  • Adjusting the working pattern on the affected days.
  • Domestic leave could be used, as could other forms of leave. All categories of leave are bookable in hours on MyHR to aid flexibility. The Domestic Leave allowance is four days per leave year for full time staff. This is pro-rated for part time staff.
  • As the teacher strikes can be considered as exceptional circumstances, for some colleagues it may be an option to combine work and childcare responsibilities for part or all of a working day.
  • A combination of these options could be used on a given day to enable a balance of work, caring and consideration for wellbeing.
  • Colleagues who deliver teaching may wish to consider advance planning for online teaching for these dates, if this would be a workable option in terms of both educational delivery and caring responsibilities.
