The next event of the University’s long-running platform for informal public discussions about current research will take place on Thursday 9 February, 19:00-20:15 at Mettricks Guildhall. Registration is not required for this free event.
“One of the great things about Research Cafés is the opportunity for university staff and students and members of the local community to interact in a relaxed, open environment,” says Dr Tony Curran of the Public Engagement with Research unit.
The topics being discussed at this Research Café:
What makes you healthy? Revealing the secrets of your first 1000 days of life, with Dr Lucy Green. Exploring the questions: How do you control your own health? Why does being healthy look so easy for some people and so hard for others? How does your health relate to that of your ancestors? What part do you think your first 1000 days of life played in how healthy you are now? What part does your health play in the health of the next generation?
‘Unsettled babies’: Crying, vomiting and funny poo! with Amy Dobson. Exploring the questions: Why are there increasing numbers of ‘unsettled’ babies? Do labels (like reflux or allergy) help? Should we be trying to reduce medicalisation? How can we build parents’ confidence and make life easier?
When a baby is admitted to the neonatal unit: parental experiences and challenges, with Dr Rina Cianfaglione. Exploring the questions: What challenges do parents experience? What should neonatal units look for/do to make the parents’ experience less traumatic? What research is important (short term and long term), and how should this be done? How should researchers and clinicians approach parents to take part in research?
