We welcome members of the public and University of Southampton students, staff and alumni to the next annual Southampton Stonewall Lecture on Tuesday 7 March 2023 – ‘LGBTQ in a Time of War: The Queer History of the Russian-Ukrainian Conflict’, with Professor Dan Healey. Please note this is an amendment to the originally advertised date.
While the war against Ukraine may seem to have little relevance to LGBTQ politics, Putin has stated that one aim of the February 2022 invasion was to prevent the spread to Russia and its neighbours of ‘Western’ forms of tolerance for LGBTQ ways of life. This lecture will explore how Putin’s use of state-backed homophobia has developed under his leadership.
Professor Dan Healey is Emeritus Professor of Modern Russian History at the University of Oxford. He is a historian of sexualities and genders in modern Russia and the Soviet Union, and continues to study the development of LGBTQ histories and communities in the non-Russian republics of the former Soviet Union.
Since 2012 the annual Southampton Stonewall Lecture has explored the rich heritage that is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) history. A key purpose is to educate contemporary audiences about the past while also promoting the University of Southampton’s commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
This will be a hybrid event. Attendees can book to attend in-person at Avenue Campus or select a ticket to join online – book your space via Eventbrite.
