Make a positive change and join our Blackout energy saving audit

Friday 24 February marks the return of Blackout, a key energy saving and sustainability event run by our Environment and Sustainability Team to analyse the University’s energy usage and wastage.

Reducing our energy usage and emissions is a critical part of our Strategic Plan – Sustainability and the Team is looking for staff to help facilitate the event. You can sign up on Eventbrite here.

The event will consist of groups of 3-4 staff and students going around selected buildings and monitoring what equipment such as monitors, computers, lights, heaters and other electrical items have been left on in offices and common learning spaces. Other than lights, no equipment will be turned off. The buildings that have signed up for Blackout are B35, B37, B44, B53, B67 and B85.

The Environment and Sustainability Team will use the data from Blackout to identify where they may be able to reduce carbon emissions across a sample of different buildings and activities, as part of their ongoing work to reduce our environmental impact and help achieve our sustainability goals.

If you’d like to sign up, you will be required to be a group leader as the rest of the group will likely be students. The key details of how to carry out the audit will be given on the night. The event starts at 18:00 and will finish at 21:00.

Here’s a reminder of the sign up link on Eventbrite.
