If you are interested in travelling abroad to study, volunteer, or work this summer, you can now apply to join a short-term summer programme offered in partnership with other universities and external providers.
From summer schools in Australia, Canada, and Mexico to internships in Fiji and research programmes in Hong Kong and Switzerland, there is wide variety of opportunities to choose from to fit your plans, budget, and interests. The lengths of the programmes can vary from two to eight weeks, and you can even join online courses offered by institutions from various countries if you can’t travel.
You are not required to choose a programme related to your degree, so you can take advantage of this to explore and learn more about other interests.
Taking part in a summer programme abroad can help you:
- Expand your knowledge in your subject area
- Develop transferable skills and build experience to add to your CV
- Meet people from around the world
- Learn a new language or improve your language skills.
Funding
If you are accepted on a summer programme, you will be eligible for a University of Southampton Scholarship of £500. Some of our partner institutions offer a limited number of tuition fee waivers for their summer schools, while other host institutions may also offer early bird rates or additional scholarships and discounts.
Thoughts from previous Study Abroad students
‘One thing I did not expect at all was the amount of friends I would make during my time in Stockholm! We explored many parts of Stockholm such as Södermalm, the Abba museum, Ice Bar, along with days out at the beach where we would watch the sun set. It was truly an experience I will never forget and I highly recommend it to anyone!’ – Laura Fetahu, Stockholm University Summer Law programme
‘Not sure what I expected from my three weeks in Hamburg but I definitely got more than I ever expected… an introduction to a new subject, adventures in a new city and friends for life!’ – Lydia Jary, Hamburg International Summer School
‘I would really recommend this opportunity if you are looking to develop skills such as leadership and public speaking, as well as pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, learning about a new culture and making friendships for life!’ – Esme Brinsden, Think Pacific Fiji volunteering programme
