Success for Southampton Alumni at the British Council Study UK Alumni Awards

A Southampton alumna has won a national award at this year’s British Council Study UK Alumni Awards.

Asmaa Kamal (MSc. Global Enterprise & Entrepreneurship, 2015) won the Business and Innovation award in the national finals in Egypt on 21 February. Asmaa is national coordinator for a regional project that adopts social enterprise as a vehicle to support migrants, refugees and local communities. The project has served more than 155,000 beneficiaries and supported 30 social enterprises in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon.

Southampton was also represented in Nigeria on 5 February, where Business School alumnus Ukachukwu Kenechukwu (BSc. Business Management, 2014) was a finalist in the Business and Innovation category for his start up 12 Inch Baguette.  On 15 March, Christina Margariti (MA Textile Conservation, 2002 and PhD. Textile Conservation Care, 2009) will also represent Southampton in the Cultural and Creativity category of the national finals in Greece.

The Study UK Alumni Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of international alumni, who are making a significant difference to their regions, countries, and communities. This year has seen a record number of Southampton alumni shortlisted for the awards – with 10 shortlisted at a national level and several more shortlisted at a global level, which will take place later this year.

Josie Love, project manager for the awards, said:

“It’s exciting to see so many of our international alumni recognised for their outstanding achievements and contributions through the British Council Awards this year.  We are particularly proud of our winner and finalists, who are doing amazing work to transform their sectors and communities, and the role that Southampton has played in their inspiring journeys.”

Later in the year, the University will be further celebrating its talented alumni during our annual Outstanding Alumni Awards.
