Parking Permit changes

The temporary suspension of all parking permit charges, introduced during the pandemic, will continue for the rest of this academic year, whilst the University works towards re-instating charges using a more flexible model to support the more widespread use of hybrid working. This further suspension also recognises the ongoing cost of living pressures.

Parking permit holders should continue to display their current permit to park on campus until further notice.

The new scheme being developed will provide increased flexibility, with day rates available to support different working patterns. The new permits and day rates will be based on your salary level and will continue to be split based on your vehicle’s CO2 emissions, with higher emission vehicles paying a higher rate, matching the previous permit structure.

The new system is being specified to use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology to ensure those staff with relevant permits or day tickets will be supported, and will prevent the misuse of our car parks from those without the relevant permit/day ticket.

Parking permits remain the best way to manage parking demand, encourage reduced car use and help to improve sustainability across our estate. Income from car parking contributes to the budget to support sustainable transport, including on site cycle storage and our Uni-Link bus services.

Separately, you may recall that the University shared the news about works beginning to the south of the existing Broadlands car park in July 2022 to create the new 120 space South Broadlands car park. We are pleased to report that this project has now completed and the additional spaces can be accessed from the current Broadlands car park. The creation of South Broadlands car Park addresses some of the loss in spaces from other projects across our estate, including the former Jubilee car park which is now the site of our major sports facilities expansion.

A map showing Broadlands car park & the new South Broadlands parking site can be found here. The map also highlights other areas of parking across our campuses.

More information about sustainable transport options can be found on our Transport website.

Permits will continue to be available to staff who live 3+ miles away from Highfield campus.

More information, including how to apply, will be shared with colleagues ahead of the installation of the new scheme.
