Launched in 2011 by the founding Director, Professor Peter JS Smith, IfLS is the university’s and region’s life sciences super-connector, catalysing impact through intellectual leadership, relationships, and expert, targeted support. The Institute facilitates fusions of expertise in research, education and enterprise from a range of disciplines to broaden scientific opportunities and address key issues in health, society and enterprise.

The Level 7 post, to be appointed internally, will provide strategic leadership to the Institute, overseeing its budget and developing a programme of activities that will strengthen both the University’s academic output and its ability to attract research funding, nurture enterprise activities, and support life sciences education. The Director will facilitate a coordinated response to interdisciplinary life sciences challenges in line with the University triple helix strategy.

The role will be 0.5FTE and will sit alongside the appointee’s substantive ERE post at the University.

The new post will report to the Vice President (Research and Enterprise) and will be responsible for the posts of Institute Project Manager, Collaboration Manager, and Institute Administrator. The Director will be assisted by two part-time Deputy Directors.

The University would like to thank Professor Smith for his strategic vision, leadership and dedication to growing life sciences at Southampton, and to Professor Hywel Morgan for stepping in as Interim Director during this period of transition.

For more information please see the recruitment website or contact Professor John Holloway, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research) on [email protected].

Closing date for applications is 10 April 2023.
