This year’s QS World Rankings by subject demonstrate our continued success as a world-leading university, with improvements across several subject areas and individual subjects. This is the release of the 2023 subject rankings following the main institutional rankings published in June last year. These rankings include almost 1500 institutions from around the world.
By subject area, there have been several improvements and continued achievements; Engineering & Technology remains our strongest subject area at =88th and is also the highest ranked domestically, at seventh. Life Sciences & Medicine improved by 13 places to rank in the top 100 at 90th, and Arts & Humanities improved by 37 places, our greatest improvement at subject area level.
In addition to these subject area successes, we have several notable individual subject achievements; Southampton’s best ranked subject is Nursing, ranked sixth, and Chemistry is our subject with the largest ranking increase this year, up 25 places to =126th.
We have six individual subjects within the Top 50:
- Nursing is ranked sixth.
- Archaeology is ranked 33rd.
- Statistics & Operational Research is 39th.
- Earth & Marine Sciences rose four places to =39th.
- Geology rose six places to 42nd.
- Geophysics rose six places to 43rd.
12 subjects are ranked within the Top 100 this year. In addition to the top 50 subjects listed above, the following subjects are ranked within the 51-100 band:
- Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing is ranked 51st, a rise of 12 places from last year.
- Physics & Astronomy is ranked 59th.
- Medicine is ranked =62nd, a rise of 9 places.
- Engineering – Electrical & Electronic is ranked =72nd.
- Philosophy rises into the 51-100 band.
- Engineering – Civil & Structural remains in the 51-100 band.
