Ofcom Meets Soton: Building Collaborations event

Join delegates from Ofcom as they present their research at a one day, in-person event on Thursday 11 May 10:00-16:00 that is designed to showcase and foster collaborations between Ofcom and the University.  The event is co-hosted by the Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP) and the Web Science Institute (WSI), and will be held in 53/4025 on Highfield Campus.

What is Ofcom?

Ofcom is the UK communications regulator, with responsibility for regulating all UK communication services (internet, radio, TV, etc.). Ofcom has the responsibility to ensure the safety of all users, including vulnerable populations. In this capacity, Ofcom develops policies and guidelines that impact businesses and individuals alike.

Why are we running this workshop?

We believe a direct dialogue with Ofcom offers an amazing opportunity to tap into three key strategic objectives of the university.
  1. It will create and form a collaboration with the UK’s most important communication regulators and therefore offer the opportunity to have a direct impact on society.
  2. It will foster research collaborations between Ofcom and UoS.
  3. It will open the door for PhD students to gain internships and jobs at one of the UK’s most important policy-making agencies.

Plan of the day:

  • Opening presentation by key staff members from Ofcom regarding the various opportunities for PGRs (internships and jobs) as well as opportunities for collaborations with a wide range of faculty members.
  • Networking lunch.
  • Presentations from faculty members from across the university. We hope that faculty from the business school, economics, computer science, criminology, law, psychology and others will join and present their work.
  • PGR presentations and the chance to meet Ofcom representatives to discuss internships and job opportunities.
