New resources developed to support doctoral supervisors

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education states that “Supervisors should be provided with sufficient time, support and opportunities to develop and maintain their supervisory practice”. To support this and the responsibilities outlined in the UoS Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision 2022-23, the Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP), Doctoral College and stakeholders from around the University have supported the development of two new resources to support doctoral supervisors.

CHEP Resources for Doctoral Supervisors SharePoint site

The CHEP Team have worked with several stakeholders to develop a resource site to support the professional development and day-to-day practice of Doctoral Supervisors. This site provides a range of resources including online training, workshops, and links to useful resources, whether you are a new or established Doctoral Supervisor.

You will find a useful infographic which signposts to the people, information and places that should be useful to you as a supervisor as well as advice on training, pages of resources and where to find support for PGRs.

Training for new doctoral supervisors Blackboard course

This course is aimed at those who are new to doctoral supervision, or new to Southampton, but is open to all staff.

The course provides a baseline of core information, including:

  • Knowledge of the regulations and procedures that support doctoral study.
  • Understanding of the expectations of postgraduate researchers (PGRs), how these may differ from supervisor’s expectations and how to manage this dynamic.
  • Understanding of the other resources that are available to support the supervisor and the PGR to succeed.

The Doctoral Supervisor Training eLearning course is available on Blackboard and will take approximately one hour to complete.

For any questions regarding the above please contact Paul Clarkson (CHEP Academic Developer Research).
