A greener approach to IT hardware provision

We’d like to share some exciting news about our efforts to support the University’s sustainability goals by reducing electronic waste. At iSolutions, we are committed to doing our part to make a positive impact on the environment, and we need your help to achieve this goal.

While we have supported the re-use of existing equipment previously, it is now a core part of our greener hardware policy. We will now only provide new equipment for newly created roles. New starters in existing positions will be encouraged to re-use equipment from the previous post holder whenever possible. In cases where equipment is unavailable or too old to be useful, we will provide replacement equipment, which may not always be brand new.

This also includes the provision of peripherals (such as mice, keyboards, monitors and webcams), which will be sourced from used stock where possible. We will contact you before delivering your computer to discuss any required peripherals.

Please be rest assured that any non-new equipment will have been thoroughly cleaned, refurbished, performance-tested and will be completely free. If we cannot find non-new equipment that will meet your needs, we promise to find one that will.

Device repairs

If your laptop or desktop computer is performing poorly, this could be due to the age of the device, but it could also be because of the performance of one or two easily replaceable components. Before poor performance drives you to request a replacement computer, please log a ticket for one of our experts to come and investigate the issue. We will of course replace your computer if a repair/part upgrade is not possible, but please support us in trying to extend its life first.

We have also partnered with a company to repair mobile devices to extend their lifespan, which includes the replacement of screens and batteries.

Equipment disposal

We are also running an amnesty on old or unused equipment; if you have any unusable equipment, you can have it collected for recycling or reusing by using the equipment reuse/return form

To ensure we are doing our best for the whole end-to-end journey of our hardware, we have also partnered with a new electronic waste recycling provider. They collect our hardware and securely destroy any data, guaranteeing that none of it ends up in landfill.

With these new measures in place, we hope to drastically decrease the amount of electronic waste the University produces, reduce our carbon emissions and dispose of waste in a more sustainable way. We are counting on your support to make this happen.
