Embedding sustainability in your learning

As part of the University’s Sustainability Strategic Plan – Goal 4, we have put together a booklet for each school, to help you identify how sustainability will be included in your studies. The Sustainability School Booklets are available for all students and staff.

Professor Simon Kemp, alongside the current sustainability interns, are helping faculties and schools to take the next steps in embedding sustainability in the University curriculum.

Embedding sustainability
Education is key to our Sustainability Strategic Plan, and delivery of Goal 4 this plan will see sustainability embedded in all taught courses at Southampton by 2025.

The University has taken great steps towards this – last year a group of interns, working with Professor Simon Kemp, mapped the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) to each undergraduate programme, showing numerous sustainable development goals on our programmes.

University-wide results

  • 1582 modules mapped
  • SDG 9 ‘industry, innovation and infrastructure’ was the most mapped
  • SDG 2 ‘zero hunger’ was the least mapped
  • The average number of SDGs mapped per module was 2.6

This work was recently discussed at a very engaging Student Co-design panel on sustainability, the results of which will help to inform the next steps of the Strategic Plan.
