AHRC networking event: The cultural politics of preservation and curation

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) are hosting an AHRC IAA event on Thursday 29 June 2023 09:30 – 16:00, in the Digital Humanities Hub, Building 65. The event is a networking opportunity for academics and practitioners – with varied expertise and experience in these fields – to share issues, ideas and possible solutions. There will also be the possibility for identifying areas and projects for potential future collaborations and IAA funding.

Event Biography

The cultural politics of preservation are increasingly fraught: the practical, ethical and political implications of collecting, curating, storing and exhibiting by galleries, libraries, archives and museums, are complex and wide-ranging. High-profile questions about the ownership and future sustainability of data, the historical provenance of artifacts, the legacies of colonialism, the implications of environmental crisis, the historical and contemporary narratives of identity and place are challenging – even for the most elite and well-resourced organisations. The challenges for small and community-based organisations are particularly acute but there is much excellent work and energy in the sector that can be shared as a way of addressing these issues.

The AHRC IAA is a 3-year strategic award (2022-2025), administered by Research and Innovation Services (RIS), to support knowledge exchange (KE), innovation and impact of Arts and Humanities research. This event is co-organised by RIS and Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities (SIAH).

We look forward to welcoming you to the event. Find out more information and reserve tickets on Eventbrite.
