Congratulations to this year’s Southampton 3 Minute Thesis® winner

Congratulations to second-year Engineering PGR (postgraduate researcher) Katherine Theobald, who was recently crowned the winner of this year’s Southampton 3 Minute Thesis® competition.

Katherine was the overall winner of the 3 Minute Thesis® final with her presentation ‘Shaken not Stirred: the impact of vibration on medical goods transported by drone’.

This international competition challenges PGRs to present their research to a general audience in only three minutes, with just one PowerPoint slide to aid them. 2023 was the tenth year of the competition taking place at Southampton, and we had some fantastic entries.

Katherine’s research investigates the effects of vibration on medical products transported by drone. While this innovative mode of transport has the potential to revolutionise medical deliveries and improve patient outcomes, there is also a risk that it could damage the medicine in the process.

Professor Chris Howls, Director of the Doctoral College congratulates Katherine on her success

The 3MT ® final took place as part of the Doctoral College Celebration Afternoon, with PGRs and staff invited to come along and watch the six faculty finalists present their research.

As well as being crowned the overall winner, Katherine’s presentation was also voted the People’s Choice winner by the audience in attendance on the day.

Katherine will now go on to represent our University in the national 3MT® competition run by Vitae later this year – congratulations Katherine!
