Eid Mubarak to all students celebrating

Eid ul-Adha is the second and largest of the two major holidays celebrated in Islam. The celebrations begin following the last day of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia which Muslims make at least once in their lives. This year, celebrations are likely to start today (Wednesday 28 June), and end on the evening of Sunday 2 July.

Eid ul-Adha is not only celebrated to mark the conclusion of Hajj, but also to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s dedication to Allah.

On the day of Eid, following additional prayers in the morning, the occasion is marked by the sacrifice of an animal. This is known as Qurbani or Udhiya, the Arabic word which means sacrificial offering. The meat is then distributed to those most in need around the world, many of whom will be eating meat for the first time all year.

Our Muslim community took part in the Eid salah prayer this morning (Wednesday 28 June) at 8:30 on the grass area outside the Muslim prayer room on Highfield Campus.
