The University of Southampton has ranked 81st in the QS World University Rankings 2024, maintaining our status as one of the top 100 universities in the world.
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith said:
“The announcement of Southampton’s position in the QS rankings, although a small fall to 81, continues to be a strong reflection of the dedication of colleagues across the University, demonstrating our excellence in teaching, research and global reputation. These results confirm our standing as a top 100 university, and I would like to thank everyone for their hard work this year.”
This year marks the 20th edition of the QS World University Rankings, and an additional 97 new entrants are included in the 1,503 institutions that were ranked. Southampton has dropped three places from last year, but still surpassed 94.6% of institutions in terms of rank.
The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings are based on a range of indicators that focus on excellence in teaching and research, the reputation of universities amongst employers and fellow academics, and the international mix of students and staff. A new Sustainability metric has been introduced this year, which is designed to measure an institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges.
This year, Southampton improved in three key metrics:
- International Research Network: +16 places to be ranked 31st, which is Southampton’s highest ranked metric this year.
- Employment Outcomes: +67 places to be ranked 235th – the biggest improvement for Southampton this year.
- International Students: +19 places to 70th. This metric has ranked in the top 100 for the last five years, reflecting the positive outcomes for our international students.
Earlier this year, Southampton placed six subjects within the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, including Nursing which ranked sixth for the seventh consecutive year.
