If you are travelling or going on holiday this summer and need to use your University IT account, make sure you can access multi-factor authentication (MFA) before you go.
MFA provides a security layer where you verify your identity using a code sent by text, phone call, or via an app when you log into your University IT account.
Consider whether you will be able to authenticate from your location to avoid getting locked out of your account. For example:
- If you will be in an area with low or poor phone signal (such as Cornwall or parts of Scotland);
- If you will be unable to access texts or calls on your mobile. For example, if you use a different mobile phone while travelling or in your home country.
Use the Microsoft Authenticator app
If you think you will have limited signal and access, we recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app instead of opting to receive a text or phone call. The app will allow you to access your account even when your phone is not connected to the internet, and only takes about 10 minutes to set up.
Further information
Instructions for using the Microsoft Authenticator app can be found in this knowledge base article by reading the “What to do if you have no signal or Wi-Fi connection” guidance.
The article also features information about other aspects of MFA, including what to do if you upgrade or lose your phone, and how to set up a back-up second factor.
If you need help
If you cannot authenticate, you will be locked out and unable to access University IT systems and services. However, if you do get locked out, you can get help from ServiceLine or the Tech Hubs (08:30-18:00, Monday-Friday).
