We have passed a major recertification audit which shows we are successfully managing our impact on the environment.
The Environmental Management System (EMS) audit assesses our compliance with ISO14001, an internationally agreed standard which helps organisations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.
The audit takes into consideration all environmental issues relevant to our operations, such as legal compliance, air pollution, water, waste management, climate change mitigation, transport and energy efficiency.
We received extremely positive feedback from the auditor on our approach and the way sustainability measures are embedded in University operations.
The EMS is recertified every three years, with our current certificate valid until August 2026. It is also subject to a wider audit schedule that the Environment & Sustainability Team conduct across the University.
Adam Tewkesbury, Associate Director Environment & Sustainability said:
“Throughout the audit process we have had really positive engagement with colleagues across the University. The auditor visited a variety of areas including sports facilities, halls of residence, faculty buildings and professional services, gaining a broad understanding of the range of processes in place to manage our environmental impact.
“This audit also marked the point at which the Students’ Union were brought within scope, with a detailed review of SUSU facilities and services. We will continue our internal audits to ensure we continue this positive trend. Thank you to everyone who gave their time to speak to the auditor, and please do contact me or my team if you’d like any information regarding the EMS or audit process.’
Our ISO14001 certificate is published online, and can be used to demonstrate our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and improving sustainability across the University.
If you see anything on campus that you think would cause damage to the environment, you can log an environmental incident on SUSSED through the H&S/Crime reporting button.
