Use of RAAC concrete – update

As part of the review and re-assessment of our buildings announced earlier this week, we have now identified the use of RAAC concrete in B52, the Turner Sims Concert Hall.

Highfield Campus, green grass and curved paths in the foreground, trees and a sculpture in the background. The sky is bright blue.

The initial structural survey suggests the material is in good condition and poses no significant risk. However, to reassure ourselves and users on the ongoing safety of the building, we will now be conducting more intrusive surveys of the areas concerned.

In the meantime, and in line with Government advice, we will now as a precaution temporarily close Turner Sims with immediate effect, while the additional surveys take place over the coming days.

Turner Sims is widely used by the University, by our local community and schools, and its concerts are greatly enjoyed by the public. Safety has to be our paramount priority, and we will re-open as soon as we can.

Alternative venues are being prepared on campus this weekend for Open Day talks due to take place in the hall, and we will be contacting other users of the concert hall shortly.

We are obviously very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
