New team and new year for the Institute for Life Sciences

The new academic year for the Institute for Life Sciences has seen the appointment of Professor Mary Barker as the second Deputy Director alongside Professor Hywel Morgan. Following the recent appointment of Professor Max Crispin as Director, this completes the refreshed Institute leadership team.

The Institute for Life Sciences, launched in 2011, aims to bring together researchers with diverse expertise to address challenges in life sciences, adding value through interdisciplinary collaborative networks to Faculties and Schools.

Max said “The appointment of Mary helps the Institute to further develop and strengthen links across the university and embrace new opportunities across the Social Sciences, Humanities and beyond. This underscores our continuing commitment to serve the whole University.

In this spirit, we are delighted to announce that the Institute is open to proposals for new cross-cutting themes with potential for interdisciplinary life sciences growth. We welcome new engagement from any colleagues, whether existing IfLS Members or those simply exploring exciting ideas.”

You can learn about our existing cross disciplinary theme activities that include BiOmics, Dementia and Ageing, Imaging and Interdisciplinary Musculoskeletal Health on the IfLS website – southampton.likn.co/life-sciences .

Max continued  “It’s been an exciting few weeks learning about the extraordinary extent of the IfLS activities and the complexities of the University. I would like to thank Professors Peter Smith, Mandy Fader, Salim Khakoo and Hywel Morgan for establishing such an exciting Institute and making the transition in the leadership team so smooth.

We want the Institute to be able to celebrate all the extraordinary achievements of its membership and Life Sciences at Southampton. We will continue to highlight interdisciplinary case studies and the profile of new and existing staff to champion the strength of Southampton’s research to our external audience.”

Membership of the Institute is open to colleagues with research interests in any aspect of interdisciplinary life sciences, considered in the broadest of terms. We operate two forms of membership for PIs and ECRs. As a member you will have access to a large knowledge base of collaborative opportunities, participate in events, meet colleagues across the university and the opportunity to apply for interdisciplinary studentships and pilot projects.
