World Mental Health Day training and events for staff

Did you know that 71% of the people would worry about telling their employer if they had a mental health condition, for fear of getting a negative response? Tuesday 10th October is World Mental Health Day and as a University, we want to mark the event by increasing awareness and continuing to break the stigma around speaking about mental health.


We understand that work contributes to your mental health and your overall wellbeing which is why we continue to provide advice and training to managers on how they can support their staff.

There are lots of events happening which you can get involved in which are listed below along with booking instructions:

  • Wellbeing café (Highfield – in person), an informal drop in to chat about wellbeing and how we support staff, refreshments will be provided, 10:00 – 11:30, John Roberts Room. You can prebook to attend the wellbeing café here but you’re welcome to drop in.
  • Winter wellbeing webinar with Solent Mind (virtual). Wednesday 11 October 14:30 – 15:30. During this session we’ll work though a winter toolkit including some timely reminders, tips and techniques to look after your mental wellbeing over the winter months.   • Guided breathing with Rob Loades (in person). Improve your mental and physical wellbeing with this one-off guided breathing session, 10:00 – 11:00, Building 100, room 7013. You can book the guided breathing session here.
  • Workplace stress awareness for all staff (virtual). Thursday 12 October, 11:00 – 12:30. Find out the common causes of workplace stress, what you can put in place to reduce stress and what support is available for UoS staff. Book on to the workplace stress awareness session here.
  • Wellbeing walk from Highfield Campus to Avenue Campus (in person), Thursday 12 October, 12:15 – 13:00, meeting outside the Jubilee Sports Centre, no prebooking required. A chance to socialise with colleagues and get some fresh air. If it’s too wet, we’ll head to The Arlott instead.
  • Mental Health eLearning on Blackboard (virtual, only 30 minutes to complete), new training module now available here.
  • Jubilee Sports Complex core fitness free taster class in the Sports Hall at Jubilee Sports Complex, Tuesday 10 October, 12:45 – 13:15 – no need to prebook, simply report to reception ten minutes beforehand. More information on the fitness classes can be found here.

  • Stress Risk Assessment Training for Managers (in person) – The October session is now fully booked but there will be more dates for Stress Risk Assessment Training added here.
