Tips for getting around campuses and the city

Below you can find an overview of transport options you may find useful for planning your journeys.

Unilink buses
Unilink is a great way to get around, linking our campuses and halls sites to various places in Southampton. Download the Unilink Bus app for full timetables and discounted student tickets.

Travelling from Winchester
If you live in Winchester, you can use the new Unilink U7 bus route. This new route operates between Highfield bus interchange, Winchester School of Art, and Winchester Broadway. The new route will complement the existing Bluestar 1 bus route, which also runs between Winchester and Southampton. Read more information on prices and timetables on the Unilink website.

Cycling
If you cycle, here are a few things you can do to have a safe journey and to keep your bike secure:

  • Ensure that you have lights, high visibility clothing, and a cycle helmet. You can buy these from the Unilink Transport Office located above the SUSU shop on University Road.
  • Register your bike with Bike Register, a national Police approved database that can help you if your bike is stolen.
  • Take a photo of your bike. Record its make, model, colour, frame number (located underneath the frame, between the pedals) and any other unique features.
  • Use two, good quality bike locks, and at least one robust D-lock when locking your bike. Approved D-locks are available at the Unilink Transport Office for £22.
  • Insure your bike or check that your contents’ insurance also covers your bike.
  • Use our cycle stores or lock your bike to the hoops at halls and on campus. To use the stores, register your ID card at the Unilink Transport Office. Registration for halls cycle storage is free for halls residents.
  • Keep your bike in good condition, so it is safe to use. The Bike Doctor provides free repairs and checks. The team can be found on the Redbrick, outside the SUSU building, on a number of dates. Have a look at SUSU What’s On for the upcoming dates.
  • The Bikes, locks, lights event, run by SUSU, offers bike repairs, refurbished bikes for sale, discounted D-locks, bike security tagging, lights, and safety kits. This event runs on the Redbrick, from 11:00-14:00 on 27 October 2023, and 29 March 2024.

For more information about how to keep your bike safe, as well as how to report bike theft and where to find support, access the Student Safety Site.

Hire Schemes
Southampton has two hire schemes in place which can help you travel sustainably around the city – there is an e-scooter hire scheme operated by Voi and a bike hire scheme by Beryl.

The Breeze App, developed by Solent Transport, can help you plan your journey around the south of Hampshire, and it can be used to hire both Voi e-scooters and Beryl bikes.

You can find more information about transport on the University website.
