Professor Tony Hey, STFC’s chief data scientist will give the annual Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre lecture on Wednesday 18 October at 14:30 at the Turner Sims. As well as having held many high-profile positions including Vice President of Microsoft Research, Tony has authored many popular science books and was awarded an OBE for services to science in 2005. In this lecture, entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Discovery: The Deep Learning Revolution”, Professor Hey will present the transformative impact of ‘Deep Learning’ neural networks such as ChatGPT and what the ‘AI for Science’ agenda means for modern scientific discovery.
