Message from the Vice-Chancellor – events in the Middle East

I know the escalating violence and loss of life in Israel and Gaza, and the distressing scenes we have all seen in recent days, will have been of deep concern to many in our community, especially for those with connections to the area. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected, and we have ensured that any members of our community who need additional support can easily find it.

This is obviously a very difficult time indeed, and one in which tensions and emotions can inevitably be heightened. Ours has always been a very inclusive community, and it is even more important at times like this that we ensure we adhere to values and behaviours which can unite us, and not divide us.

It is of course right that students and staff can freely and respectfully express their lawful views in a safe space, whilst ensuring that all members of our community feel safe, supported and included.

We know that in recent days in the UK there has been an escalation of antisemitic incidents. We will never tolerate any forms of discrimination, incitement, bullying or harassment, and we will not hesitate to take swift and decisive action against any threats to our Jewish students and staff, or to any other members of our community or faiths, to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

We all hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this situation, in the meantime we will of course continue to ensure we listen to and provide support to any individuals or groups who feel impacted or vulnerable.

Best wishes,
Mark E. Smith
Vice-Chancellor
