As a university, we can only change the world for the better with people from all backgrounds. It is our respect, compassion, and curiosity for what makes us different which strengthens our community and the communities we serve. This is why the Widening Participation & Social Mobility directorate calls upon the University community to show that we CARE this National Care Leavers Week (25 October to 1 November).
CARE stands for:
- Celebrating care leavers
- Amplifying their voices
- Raising awareness of challenges
- Encouraging change in policy and practice.
However you feel you might best be able to show you CARE, we greatly encourage you to do so and can offer our support to assist you in doing so.
In response to this call for National Care Leavers Week, the Widening Participation & Social Mobility directorate is proud to commit to:
- Could You Be a Foster Carer? Webinar with Southampton City Council on Monday 30 October, 12:30pm
- University-wide promotion of the support available to Care Leavers and Care Experienced students
- A Portrait of Care Exhibition on Instagram and celebration event at John Hansard Gallery on Wednesday 15 November
We also recommend Become Charity, The EaCES Handbook and Care Leavers – 360 Degrees UoS Podcast to support understanding.
Do also note that Estranged Students Solidarity Week takes place from 27 November to 1 December, with the Widening Participation & Social Mobility directorate to share details of their plans for this in a future SUSSED post.
